On Vesta, Lieutenant Dale Hunter is assigned to assist the enigmatic and beer-loving George Rockford, a Strategic Service agent with a cryptic plan to counteract the Verdam empire's expansion and secure an alliance with Jardeen, a pivotal neutral world. Rockford strategically uses Hunter to provoke Val Boran, a Jardeen diplomat, into realising his enduring love for Princess Lyla, a Vestan royal trapped by a proxy marriage to the odious and manipulative Lord Narf. Narf, conspiring with Verdam envoy Sonig, attempts to smear Hunter and Lyla using staged photographs and later hires assassins to kill Hunter, Lyla, and Boran. Rockford, however, orchestrates a rescue by the Royal Guard, leading to Narf and Sonig’s downfall. Narf is exiled to his estate with no female company, while Sonig faces likely execution upon his return to Verdam for his failures. Lyla marries Boran, uniting Jardeen and securing Vesta's allegiance to the Terran Republic. Despite his heroism, Hunter is left heartbroken, recognising that Lyla was never his to love, while Rockford reveals the success of his unconventional and devious strategy, proving that subtlety and cunning can triumph over brute force.
